Reducing Debug Output Load

The Cisco Debug commands can add a significant load to the router, particularly if it is busy. Luckily, there are several configuration commands you can use to reduce this load. First, use 'logging buffered' to write the messages to internal buffers. Second, turn off console logging with the 'no console logging' command. This prevents the router from spending much of its time monitoring the debug output going to the console serial communications port. Finally, use the 'logging host' command to send logging information to a SYSLOG server. The net effect of all these commands is a reduced load on the router while in debug mode.
